Why do I need to reduce my waste? In response to concerns about increasing waste, the NSW government introduced the Waste Minimisation and Management Act (1995) which sets out a new framework for managing waste. The main aims of the Act were to:
Waste & Recycling FactsCouncil's domestic waste collection service comprises three components - a weekly household garbage service and a fortnightly recycling and green waste service (same day as household garbage). The service aims to maximise the amount of materials recycled and reduce the volume of rubbish being disposed to landfill. (WWCC: The introduction of this service in 1997 has resulted in considerable gains in waste reduction. There was a 210% increase in recyclables collected as a result of the introduction of the kerbside recyclables collection, with about 9,000 tonnes/year of material currently being diverted from landfill. The service also includes a separate garden organics collection which currently diverts more than 7,000 tonnes/year. Paper and cardboard accounts for nearly 80% of the recycled content. There is currently about 60,000 tonnes of waste being landfilled at Gregadoo Waste Management Centre, which is Council's major waste management facility. About 66% of the total waste is from commercial and industrial sources, including building and demolition waste. Local businesses are encouraged to use the 240L commercial kerbside service (where available) for putrescible wastes, and separate the rest of their waste into recyclable streams, which can be serviced by a local recycling contractor. |
