Margo Lewers supervising installation of Expansion – Mosaic mural for the Canberra Rex Hotel, 1960
Margo Lewers (1908 – 1978) was one of Australia’s most prominent and ground-breaking abstract artists based in Sydney. This exhibition traces the evolution of her mosaic work, with a focus on the preparation, installation and restoration of one of her most important pieces, Expansion at the Canberra Rex Hotel. The physical prominence of Expansion, together with its critical success, further enhanced Margo Lewers’ reputation as an artist of significance in Sydney’s contemporary art circles.
